3 Corners & a Double Simpson Desert Crossing - Day 9

Day 9 - 31/3/2016 - Camp 4 to the Birdsville Pub

This morning was the coolest morning of the trip.  It was about 8degC when we all surfaced for breakfast.  The aim was to make it through to Birdsville that night but we still had a lot of sand dunes to cover to get there.  Because I was still sick and drained of energy from not having eaten anything for 3 days, I wasn’t really in the right frame of mind for early morning photos, so no camp photo today.

Day 8 - 30/3/2016 - Camp 3 to Camp 4

At about 3am in the still of the night a dingo started howling.  It sounded like it was sitting in the middle of our camp site.  Then a few dunes over another dingo answered.  It certainly made the hairs on the back of the neck standard up and made it difficult to get back to sleep.

3 Corners & a Double Simpson Desert Crossing - Day 7

Day 7 - 29/3/2016 - Camp 2 to the edge of the Simpson Desert Reserve and Camp 3

Later that night the wind eased off, but it then started to rain.  It was a constant drizzle most of the night.  Selwyn had left a left cup out overnight and at breakfast he mentioned that there was about 1mm in it from the rain overnight.  The rain was part of a cool change that came through.  The change was very much welcomed.  It was a bit of a slower start to the morning as we were all trying to let the tents dry out a bit before packing them up.  The rain was just enough to wet everything and having the sand stick to everything while trying to pack up.

You can just see the dry tent footprint beside the vehicle

3 Corners & a Double Simpson Desert Crossing - Day 5

Day 5 - 27/3/2016 - Haddon Corner to Simpson Desert Camp 1

Generally not being an early riser, it was getting easier to get up earlier due to the sound of the birds at dawn, and the heat slowly but noticeably increasing.  We were all up relatively early this morning.  It was only our second day of actual camping so we were all still getting into the groove of our camp packups.

Selwyn packed up and was the first to head off so that he could try and source some spare parts in Birdsville before everything closed.  We still had a 260km or so run into Birdsville from Haddon Corner.

I was the next to leave.  I was about an hour behind Selwyn because I took my time packing up and I also took a few photos.  Snowy was the last to leave and he was about an hour behind me.

Day 4 - 26/3/2016 - Cameron Corner to Haddon Corner

The wind finally started to ease off and it started to cool down a little in the hours leading up to dawn.  That was about the only respite we received from the temperature.  Even when we started packing up fairly early in the morning you could feel the temperature starting to rise.

3 Corners & a Double Simpson Desert Crossing - Day 2

Day 2 - 24/3/2016 - Goondiwindi to Bourke

After a good nights sleep I was up and on the road again by about 8am.  The early start was useful because as soon as I crossed over the border at Goondiwindi into NSW, I lost an hour due to daylight saving.

We had passed through Brewarrina at the start of our 2012 trip.  It was interesting to compare how dry it looked now compared to back then.

3 Corners & a Double Simpson Desert Crossing - Day 1

Day 1 - 23/3/2016 - Bundaberg to Goondiwindi

What was planned to be a quiet easter break was suddenly going to be not so quiet and relaxing!  A mate from Uni days mentioned that he was planning on doing a double Simpson Desert crossing over the easter break and wanted to know if I wanted to tag-a-long.  It was too good an opportunity to pass up.  A Simpson Desert Trip had been on my bucket list for a while but I had never really put much thought into how I was actually going to do it.  So when this opportunity presented itself it was too good to refuse.

2016 also marked the 20 year anniversary of finishing Uni, so what better way to mark the occasion than doing a road trip with a Uni mate and picking up some prominent survey marks along the way, (we did Surveying at Uni, hence the theme of picking up the survey marks).

It was going to be my first major camping trip without the camper so I had to do a bit of work to re-work and setup my camping configuration.  I managed to get all necessary camping gear in along with all of the recovery gear, extra spare tyre, 2 x 20ltr fuel jerry cans, 30ltrs of “working” water and 30ltrs of purely drinking water, spare engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, fan belts, radiator hoses and other miscellaneous spares.

All packed up and ready to roll!
