Tasmania Trip - Day 33

Day 33 - 26/2/2014 – Devonport to Melbourne

Another sleep in and late start. It was going to be pretty much just a day just sitting around and taking it easy. We couldn't board until 5pm for a 7:30pm departure, and we were only 10 minutes away from the boarding dock. The van park was really good as you could pay about $10 extra and you could stay on the site until you needed to board. In hindsight we could have spent an extra day somewhere else and just driven into Devonport closer to boarding time. However it was good just having another recuperation day because we had a long drive ahead of us.

Tasmania Trip - Day 32

Day 32 - 25/2/2014 – Launceston to Devenport

It was pretty much our last full day in Tasmania. We didn't have far to go or much planned so it was another slow start. Basically catching our breath before the fast push home in a couple of days time.

Tasmania Trip - Day 31

Day 31 - 24/2/2014 – Launceston Day Trip/Cataract Gorge

As the only thing planned for the day was a walk around Cataract Gorge and the Launceston CBD, we weren't in any great rush to get moving, especially after the last couple of early starts. We decided to park at Cataract Gorge, take the chairlift across the gorge and then walk into the CDB.

Tasmania Trip - Day 30

Day 30 - 23/2/2014 – Beauty Point to Launceston

Even though we weren't moving far today we had to be up and on the road early as I was doing the Hollybank Treetops adventure. Ziplining through the forest. The tour started at 9am at Hollybank so it was an early pack up to make sure that we could get there in time for the start.

It was absolutely fantastic. It took close to 3 hours to go through the induction and then around to all 6 “cloud stations” - platforms in the trees at heights averaging about 30m above the ground. The highest point being 50m above the valley floor as go from one side of the valley to the other. The lengths of the zipline vary from 15m to 400m. On the 400m length you can hit speeds of about 80kph!

After lunch at the Hollybank Adventure centre we headed to the van park at Legana. It was one of the closest van parks that we could find to Launceston. It backed right onto the West Tamer Highway. The peace and tranquility of the last few stops was well and truly gone. We spent the afternoon catching up on the boring domestic duties, shopping washing etc etc.

Tasmania Trip - Day 29

Day 29 - 22/2/2014 – Myrtle Park to Beauty Point

Well it was our coldest night in Tasmania and the coldest night we had ever had in summer! It dropped to 0.5 deg overnight. We kept the heater running all night so it was a nice and toasty 15 deg or so, which certainly made it bearable.

Tasmania Trip - Day 27

Day 27 - 20/2/2014 – Coles Bay to St Helens/Bay of Fires

From Coles Bay we headed north to St Helens. We were on the move so early this morning that we actually arrived in St Helens just after 10am. Even when checking in at the van park, the people on the front desk had a bit of a grumble that we were there so early and the site didn't have enough time to “rest” between occupations.

After unhitching and smoko, we headed off to the Bay of Fires. The wind and clouds were also starting to pick up.

We were on the road by about 8:30 this morning as we had a quite a few stops to make on the way to Port Arthur. Too do this we had to back track through Huonville to Hobart and make it through the CBD. For a small CBD they seem to have lanes going every which way. It wasn't easy trying to dive across 2 lanes of traffic to get the right exit, but we managed.

Tasmania Trip - Day 23

Day 23 - 16/2/2014 – Huonville to Dover

After a windy and rainy night it was a fantastic morning so we took our time to get moving. We wanted to let the camper dry off a bit before we packed up. It dumped 35mm of rain over night so the ground was a little bit soggy under foot packing up. While things dried out and the gas bottle got filled, it gave us a bit of a chance to take some photos of the camp grounds.

Tasmania Trip - Day 19

Day 19 - 12/2/2014 - Strahan, Gordon River and Sir John Falls

Yet another early start! I thought we were meant to be on holidays and catching a few sleepins!!!! We had to be at the seaplane office by 8am for an 8:30am departure. On arrival at the departure point we collected our life jacket belts, worked out the seating in the plan and all climbed aboard. Just after we all buckled in the pilot asked if we were all ok to delay the departure. It was overcast with low cloud, and looking at the rain radar showed a rain band heading for the same area as we were going to fly over, so he recommended that we give it about an hour or so for the weather to clear other wise we wouldn't see anything.

Even though it wasn’t going to be a big day driving wise we still needed an early start because we were going to do a bush walk into Montezuma Falls, one of Tasmania's highest waterfalls.  Being up early also meant that I could take a few more photos! The morning at Lake MacKintosh was magical.

Tasmania Trip - Day 14

Day 14 - 7/2/2014 - Cradle Mountain (Marions Lookout)

Overnight the temperature dropped to 3 deg, which was a really nice change from the past week or so.  Today we were going to tackle the walk to Marions Lookout.  It was a about a 7.2km return walk from the Dove Lake car park.  Because we were a little bit earlier than the hordes of tourists, we decided to drive to the Dove Lake car park instead of catching the shuttle bus.  It was a good decision because we saw our first echidna of the trip.

Tasmania Trip - Day 13

Day 13 - 6/2/2014 - Devonport to Cradle Mountain

Well all I can say is that we were glad that we had a cabin!  It allowed us to relax as much as possible.  We had our own shower and toilet, and when things got rough it was good to be lying down in a comfortable bed with a TV to distract you!  The trip wasn’t too bad for the first few hours crossing Port Phillip Bay, but after we went through the heads, that was when things started getting interesting.

We didn’t pass through the heads until about 10pm ish so the first few hours were relatively calm, but after that you could tell that we had hit the swell.  We were on deck 7 out of 11  and our windows were constantly getting a drenching from the waves hitting the bow of the ship and then 5 or seconds later you would hear the spray hit the windows and run down the front of the ship.  I couldn’t photograph it because it was too dark.  You would hear the bang of the wave against the hull, and when looking out the window, you could see a white sheet of water against the sky, and then a few seconds later the water would drench the window that you were looking out.  The ferry was moving up and down so much that it was a bit difficult walking around.  Luckily we had had our showers earlier when we were in the calm water of Port Phillip Bay!  Even when you were lying in bed it felt like you were on a roller coaster with your stomach dropping all of the time.

We managed to get a couple of hours sleep just as we were nearing Tasmania as the land protected the path of travel a bit.  We had a wake up call via the loudspeaker at 5:30am, just as we were docking in Devonport.  We didn’t have a deep sleep but at least were rested.  At 6am they called for people to start heading down to certain car decks.  Luckily we were in the first group.

Tasmania Trip - Day 12

Day 12 - 5/2/2014 - Boarding the Spirit of Tasmania

We were booked on the night time voyage on the Spirit of Tasmania so we didn’t have to check in until 5pm for a scheduled departure time of 7:30pm.  Because we weren’t familiar with the area where the boarding happens and we had heard that there was a very low bridge on the route that the GPS takes you which has claimed few caravans, we decided to do a test run without the camper to work out how to get there, how long it was going to take us to get there, and make sure we didn’t take the route with the low bridge!  We worked out it was going to take close to an hour to travel the 28km to get to the dock so we left the van park at 4pm.

Because it was a relatively short drive into Melbourne, it was a slow start to the morning.  All of the other vans around us had already left so it made it look like we had a lot more space than we actually did.

Tasmania Trip - Day 10

Day 10 - 3/2/2013 - Canberra to Lakes Entrance

Up early and on the road again! We were heading to Melbourne.  Instead of backing tracking out of Canberra and onto the Hume Highway, where we have seen most of the surrounding country, we decided to head due south through Canberra and Cooma.

Day 9 - 2/2/2014 - Boorowa to Canberra

Finally, a day where we get to do some touristy stuff instead of driving!  As it was a relatively short drive, (still a couple of hours), into Canberra so we had a bit of a slower start than the previous mornings.

Tasmania Trip - Day 8

Day 8 - 1/2/2014 - Lake Yarrie to Boorowa

We awoke to a fantastic morning on Yarrie Lake.  The slight detour out of Narrabri was soooo worth it.  It was so much better than staying anywhere close to the highway.  The temperature also continued to drop to a nice 17 or 18 overnight making it a nice cool and quiet stop.
